Camp Slide Show

The words to the song we wrote as a group, sung to the tune of Star Wars:

We think that fire is amazing, but don't play with it.
Volcanoes erupt.  (2x)

Come on, let's go and light some sparklers.
There are three types of volcanoes:
shield, strato-cone and cinder-cone.
We can all go have a campfire!

We think that fire is amazing, but don't play with it.

What everyone should know about fire

1. Don't play with fire.
2. Fire needs fuel, heat, and oxygen.
3. It's important to be safe around fire.
4 Be careful not to breathe smoke from the fire.
5. Don't get too close to the fire.
6. You can roast marshmallows, hot dogs and other food on the fire.
7. You can also burn yourself, so be careful!
8. Don't get in lava because it can burn you!

Chemistry Presentation

Today some chemistry professors from Willamette did a fun presentation for us.

First, they told us about safety.  Safety is the most important thing!

Then, they told us about combustion.  That is when oxygen and fuel react and make carbon dioxide, water, and energy.  We saw the professors make ethanol combust.  It was a really loud sound!

The professors also made gummy bears combust.  They called it screaming gummy bears.

Finally, they told us about how different metals make different colors when they combust.  Copper makes green, potassium makes purple, strontium makes red, and lithium makes red.  The professors put hydrogen (a fuel) and some salts with the metals in them in a balloon.  When they exploded they made different colors, like fireworks!

It was really fun.

We learned even more on Tuesday!

We made gold pennies!  We used sodium hydroxide, a burner, water, vinegar, salt, and steel wool.

We learned how to say the colors in Russian.  Red is krasny, yellow is zholty, green is zelony, and blue is seeny.

We started making paintings with wax.  They are encaustics.

In volcano class, we made the base of our model volcanoes.  We also learned about the three types of volcanoes: strato-cone, shield, and cinder cone.

At recess, we get to play four-square, "Down by the Banks," volleyball, Capture the Flag, back flips with the teacher, and Everybody It tag.

What we learned yesterday

We learned some Russian yesterday.  We can write our names with the Russian alphabet.  They have a different alphabet than we do.

We also learned about volcanoes and how they explode.  There are different types of volcanoes.  There are super volcanoes.  Scientists believe that there is a super volcano under Yellowstone park.  If it blew up, the whole U.S. would be destroyed.

We learned about how to tell time with a shadow.  They used to have giant rocks that had things under it.  They would look at the shadow on the stone, because it moved during the day, and they could tell what time it was.  Then we made our own sundials.

We learned about fire.  We learned that we shouldn't get close to it or touch it.

What We're Looking Forward To

We want to learn about fire.
We know how to set a small fire with a magnifying glass - maybe we'll do that!
We want to make fireworks!
We want to learn what makes a fire.

Welcome to the yellow group's blog!  We are a group of first and second graders participating in Awesome Academic Adventures this summer, where we get to learn all sorts of interesting things about science, art and world cultures.  This week is called Fire Week, and it's all about fire!  Check back every day to find out what we're learning about.
