Camp Slide Show

video

The words to the song we wrote as a group, sung to the tune of Star Wars:

We think that fire is amazing, but don't play with it.
Volcanoes erupt.  (2x)

Come on, let's go and light some sparklers.
There are three types of volcanoes:
shield, strato-cone and cinder-cone.
We can all go have a campfire!

We think that fire is amazing, but don't play with it.
Volcanoes erupt.  (2x)

  1. What a great week the kids had. Can you blog a little bit about how you made the sparkler sticks?

  2. It sure was a wonderful week! I didn't actually get to make the sparklers with the kids; Meghan, another teacher, led the exciting activity. I asked her what she did, and she gave me the following instructions:

Here are the ingredients and steps to make the sparklers:
    Strontium Nitrate 200 g
    Steel Powder 120 g
    Aluminum 32 g
    Airfloat Charcoal 2 g
    Boric Acid 6 g
    Dextrin 40 g
    Aqueous Ethanol 90 ml
    Wooden Skewers
Step 1: Mix the first five components together (all except the Dextrin, Ethanol and Skewers)
Step 2: Add 25 ml of Ethanol to Dextrin and stir until it become a paste.
Step 3: If there are any large clumps in the paste break them up.
Step 4: Add paste to dry sparkler components and stir.
Step 5: Add 65 ml of Ethanol to your mixture and stir.
Step 6: Dip wooden skewers into mix and let dry for 24 hours. Apply 2 more coats.
